Russula variata Ban. apud Pk. Variable Russula. Syn R. cyanoxantha var. variata (Ban. Peck) Singer. Cap 5-15cm across, convex then Battened, center depressed; very variable in color, shades of greenish yellow mixed with pink or purple; dry to slightly greasy. Gills adnate to slightly decurrent, crowded, conspicuously forked; white. Stem 30-100 x 10-30mm; white to dull cream; dry, dull, often wrinkled lengthwise. Flesh brittle; white. Odor unpleasant. Taste disagreeable, often acrid. Spores ovoid, 7-11.4 x 5.5-9.5µ; warts 0.3-1µ high, no reticulum present. Deposit white (A). Cap cystidia scattered, small, short, and narrow, ends slightly swollen. Habitat in oak woods. Often abundant. Found widely distributed in North America. Season July-October. Edible. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.) Comment Chemical reaction to FeS04 on flesh is almost nil to slightly greenish. |
